Payment for borrowed car Posted By: Alias Category: General
FIGHT DETAIL
A guy at work offered to let me borrow his car for a week. He said his brother is out of the country and left his car, so he will drive his brother's and I can drive his older car. All he asked is that I put gas in it and get it washed in return.
When I get the car, it is disgusting and filthy, cigarette ashes covering everything. I had to have it washed inside and out and filled with gas before using it. I figured I would have it washed once more before returning it.
A few days later I got a $25 ticket for being two minutes late in a metered parking spot. To my surprise, there was also a $40 ticket for expired inspection. I felt annoyed that he hadn't told me it was expired, but I figured he was nice enough to let me borrow it, I would pay it instead of getting it washed again.
Next time I saw him at work I asked him why he didn't tell me about the inspection. He feigned surprise that it was expired (it expired jan 09), then asked if I could get it inspected for him since the weekend was coming up. I asked how much it would cost, and he said he would pay for it. So I take it in. At the inspection place, the inspector informs me that the tags are also expired, and do I also want emissions test done (required to get new stickers for tags)? I call my coworker and he says yes please have them do it, I will pay. The total is $44 for both inspections.
So I fill the tank one last time and return the car. When my coworker asks how much he owes me for the inspections, I told him don't worry about it....but since I paid for the inspections, give him the ticket to pay. He takes it but doesn't seem to happy. But, I feel a little guilty since he did let me borrow it.
Should I have paid for the ticket since he was nice enough to let me borrow his car for a week, or was I right to give it to him to pay?

You need to pay your parking ticket. That's your problem. The other ticket and the inspections are completely his problem.
Since the car was empty to begin with and super-filthy, I would definitely have gotten receipts for both to prove what shape it was in. Unless you emptied the gas tank, if there was 1/4 tank or more in there when you returned, there's no way I would have completely filled it again. Absolutely wouldn't even considering washing it a second time in one week either.
The way I see it, he may even owe you compensation for time spent solving his DMV issues with the two inspections and new tags, etc. Of course this jackass knew what shape his car was in and of course he knew about the DMV issues. He just took you for a merry ride.

i understand where you are coming from but bottom line its his resposability and there was no agreement to have to pay anything extra, just the gas and wash and considering how dirty it was when you got it

Your verbal agreement was to wash the car and fill with gas when returned. You could have returned it immediately when the other issues we evident. The ticket that you got for the parking place is you responsibility. Getting it inspected etc is not in your realm of agreement. Doing all that you did still leaves me with one thought about this situation...you need professional help.....LOVE

Emotion is a tricky animal. Especially guilt. Sometimes one can feel guilty for thing(s) that don't make sense. Sometimes one must ignore their guilt or emotions if its contradicts logic like in your case. You've went above and beyond the original agreement. You paid for the inspection which you didn't have to. So you are right my friend.

You're not responsible for anything other than what you guys agreed on before-hand. That's gas and car wash. He would've had to pay for all inspections & tix anyway. Prolly lent it to you hoping you'd do it for him.

He should so pay the ticket. You should not pay it 100%. If he gets mad over it maybe time to find a new friend.

He should definitely pay the ticket. It wasn't your fault that his paperwork wasn't in order. Plus you were nice enough to take it through inspection, get the INSIDE cleaned..all of that. You more than held up your end of the bargain.
